ALASKA NATIVE HERITAGE CENTER

Another sunny day here in Anchorage. A fine day for walking around the park and sniffing every single blade of grass. I’m really so good at that. The humans had another adventure planned which did not include Gianni, Bella or yours truly.

Today they visited the Alaska Native Heritage Center here in Anchorage. The Center is located on 26 wooded acres and shares the heritage of 11 major cultural groups. They watched demonstrations of Native Alaskan dancing, storytelling, and Native games. In the galleries there were cultural displays that highlighted the five cultural groups. The large indoor space had galleries, a theater, and a large gathering place for the demonstrations.

Outdoors on the grounds there are six life-sized authentic and traditional Native Dwellings. They followed a path around a lake and were able to read and experience each of the dwellings. The houses told the stories of the regions and peoples and how they adapted and continue to thrive over the years.

There was also a marketplace where they could meet Alaskan Native artists and view art demonstrations as they are making their art. The Kathies were especially interested in the jewelry.
