Seventh Heaven at Seven Feathers

It took us about 4 hours today to drive from Mount Shasta, California to Canyonville, Oregon.  Our trip took us past miles cattle ranches in California before entering the green forests of Oregon.  There were several steep grades to go up and down and up and down again before we reached our destination.  We arrived at the beautiful Seven Feathers Resort in the late afternoon, and I think it is one of the best places we have ever stayed.  The sites are large and beautifully landscaped and there are walking paths and features all through the park.  It is rated a 10-10-10 Superior by Trailer Life and we definitely agree!  Even the dog park is beautiful, with nice fresh redwood bark and no weeds.




The casino and RV park was built by seven families of the Umpqua tribe, thus the name, Seven Feathers.  The casino has a beautiful sculpture of an eagle at the entrance that must stand 30 or 40 feet tall. After cocktails and barbecuing steaks Kathe and Jim tried their luck at the slot machines.  They came back early so I guess we didn't strike it rich.  There's always tomorrow.

Where's the lake?

Tonight is our second night here at Abrams Lake RV resort.  We didn't get to explore much yesterday because we got here so late.  The tiny lake was very disappointing, I've seen bigger puddles if you know what I mean.  We are camped between cedar trees that are at least sixty feet high.  The good news is that there are plenty of ducks and squirrels here to chase, if they would only let me.  I spent an hour in my lounge chair this morning watching and wishing.

Kathe and Jim found out that there are six lakes in the area with great hiking trails.  They went for a couple of short hikes to warm up.  They haven't been hiking in a while and their hiking legs are a little rusty.  As you can see from the pictures the views were beautiful at both lakes.

Castle Lake was seven miles away from our camp and at a higher elevation.  They hiked for a while until the rocky terrain made it too difficult to continue.  Not a great choice for the first hike of the trip, so they went to Lake Siskiyou where the hiking trail was flat and a lot more fun.

Tomorrow we head towards Oregon and the Seven Feathers Casino!

How many miles?

Today was a long, long, extra long driving day.  There was a little miscalculation in the number of miles to be driven today.  We were only supposed to drive 203 miles but by the time we reached Mount Shasta we had traveled over 268 miles and everyone was tired.  Guess Kathe's smart phone isn't all that smart.

As we left the Sacramento Delta the scenery changed from boat slips and corn fields to vineyards and nut orchards.  Another 50 miles and we were in the middle of miles and miles of rice paddies, then back to the fruit and nut orchards.  Further along  the I-5 we saw rolling golden meadows dotted with oak trees.  Things changed again and we passed more nut and olive orchards before reaching Lake Shasta and the tall spruce and fir trees of the Shasta Trinity National Forest.  Early to bed for all!

  

You call this a vacation!

All we did today was sit in the lounge chairs in the shade and hang out at the pool. 
There are no squirrels, no rabbits, and hardly any birds to chase.  It's just too darn hot!  No self respecting wildlife would venture out when it's 105 degrees in the shade.  Here is a picture of me watching the only 2 birds dumb enough to be out in this heat besides Kathe and Jim.

Tonight the wind has come up and the temperature has dropped 20 degrees so we should have good sleeping weather.

Tomorrow we will be headed to Mount Shasta and another adventure.

A short/long drive

It was a short drive today, only about 100 miles continuing up the I-5 to the Sacramento Delta.  The scenery alternated between barren dried grasslands and green fields of corn and fruit and nut orchards.  Where the water flows food grows.

We arrived at the Delta KOA the hard way, listening to the new GPS we drove about 10 more miles that necessary, but we eventually arrived in spite of that annoying lady.  Our campsite is under the trees and close to the water but it is really hot, over 100 degrees today.  I'm staying inside with the air conditioning on full blast!

They went exploring this afternoon to the town of Isleton.  It is a National Historic site and there are many 19th century storefronts that reflect the Chinese influence of the Delta area.  Then they came back with ice cream on their breath.

Dinner tonight at the Spindrift restaurant for the $19.95 Surf and Turf special.  Hope they bring me back some "Turf"!

On The road again

Okay, so we really are on a motor home trip.  I was a little confused this morning with all the packing and unpacking, but when I got tossed into my crate and the engine started we were on the way. 

They drove over 250 miles today up the I-5.  It was so BUMPY I couldn't even take a nap.  We are stopped at a KOA in Santa Nella for the night and my teeth are still rattling.  The most exciting thing we saw today was a bunch of smelly cows at the Harris ranch.

Something big is about to happen

Well, I think something big is about to happen!  The hallway is filled with boxes, the bikes are on top of the car, and my bed is missing.  This can only mean one thing!!! ROAD TRIP!!!

Hope they remembered to bring lots of treats and toys.
